Myths about Hypnotherapy

If someone asked you to describe a hypnotherapist, what would you picture?

Would it be an individual who attempts to speak to the deceased through different tongues?

In your description, does the hypnotherapist make you participate in 'strange activities' during the trance-like state?

Does it seem like he is guessing more than pronouncing facts about your life?

It is not uncommon to have these stereotypes about hypnotherapy. Not one of the above described practices will occur within a normal hypnotherapy session. If you are still unsure of the validity of your choden hypnotherapist, just ask questions during your consultation. Questions like;

  • What are the methods you practice to understand information?

  • Do you have testimonials from previous clients?

  • What are the precise qualifications you have received to perform hypnotherapy?

Popular myths about hypnotherapy.

Lots of people give hypnosis a wide birth because they either don’t understand it, or have opinions about it's validity as a healing tool based upon previously learned misconceptions or hear-say. Let’s look at the more common worries people associate with hypnotic trance…

Losing Control

There are two things to remember here. First, your conscious mind is always present in hypnosis and a hypnotherapeutic session and you can choose to come out of a hypnotic state anytime you like. Secondly, your subconscious mind will not act upon any suggestions that would violate your ethical and moral codes.

Revealing Your Innermost Secrets

Quite simply - It won't happen unless you choose to reveal them. Once again, in a hypnotic state, your subconscious mind will protect your secrets unless you choose to tell them.

Getting Lost in Trance

This simply doesn't happen. First off, you are in a perfectly natural state of mind and conscious the whole time. Even if you were to drift off to sleep, you would simply wake up just like you would from a nap.

Can a Hypnotist Make Me Do Something Against My Will?

Not possible - as you are conscious during hypnosis and could stop a session anytime you wanted to stop. And again, your subconscious mind is very protective of you and would not accept any suggestions that would be harmful to you.

Is Hypnosis Safe?

Yes. Remember, hypnosis is a natural state of mind, and natural states of mind are not dangerous. Of course, when you practice self-hypnosis or listen to a hypnosis CD or tape, don't do so while you're driving a car or taking a bath or operating machinery. Always use common sense.

There is nothing to fear with hypnosis. Hypnosis is a simple, natural state of mind that offers you the opportunity to access and program the powerful subconscious level of your mind.

Let's dispel some more myths, in order for you to understand hypnotherapy and hypnosis better.

1. Genie Hats: All hypnosis, wherever you are, will be conducted with an individual that looks, dresses, and acts just like you.

2. Strange Activities: During hypnosis the hypnotherapist often counts the client down into a quite state of tranquillity. During this period, the hypnotherapist will attempt to confront the individual’s doubts, fears, lack of confidence with a direct style of speech. However, the client will never be asked or forced to participate in any strange activities during any part of the hypnosis session.

3. Guessing: “...It seems to me that you are struggling with a deep pain within your love life?”. “Actually, I’m actually happily engaged!”. If it turns out that the hypnotherapist seems to guessing information, you should be able to tell within the first few minutes. Then again, you get what you pay for. A legitimate hypnotherapy establishment will charge anywhere between £60 and £90 an hour. Chances are, if you feel like you are being bamboozled, it may be because you only spent £30 for a hypnotherapy session. They charge so little for a reason!

4. Different Tongues: Unless you are in a country that is not English speaking, you will not be bombarded with a barrage of different tongues. As previously stated, hypnotherapy is conducted in a conversational mode, in order to put the client at ease. The more comfortable a client is, the more likely it is that the hypnotherapy will be successful.

5. Qualifications: Any legitimate professional has a list of qualifications and certifications they must receive in order to perform their role. The same goes for individuals who want to perform hypnotherapy. Your chosen hypnotherapists should have a list of testimonials and achievements that they have accomplished.
